About
Located near Famagusta, to the west of the ancient city of Salamis, St. Barnabas Monastery is one of the most sacred and meaningful sites in terms of the history of Christianity on the island of Cyprus. It is dedicated to Saint Barnabas, who came to Cyprus in 45 AD to spread Christianity and is considered one of the island's native saints.
Following the discovery of Saint Barnabas's tomb here in 478 AD, the structure was built with the financial support of Byzantine Emperor Zeno; it acquired its current magnificent form through restorations it underwent throughout history.
Today, the complex consists of two main sections:
Icon Museum: Located within the historic church building dating from the 18th century, it houses a rich collection of Orthodox icons gathered from all over the island.
Archaeology Museum: Located in the former monk cells surrounding the monastery courtyard, it exhibits unique historical artifacts unearthed from excavations in the region, ranging from the Bronze Age to the Roman Period.
In addition, right next to the monastery, there is a small chapel (tomb) containing the sacred sarcophagus of Saint Barnabas. With both its rich historical heritage and peaceful atmosphere, St. Barnabas is one of the must-visit iconic spots for cultural and faith tourism in Cyprus.
