About
Located just north of Famagusta on the coast of the Mediterranean, the Ancient City of Salamis is one of the most important and magnificent archaeological sites on the island of Cyprus. Founded in the late Bronze Age in the 11th century BC, the city hosted many civilizations throughout history, from the Phoenicians to the Assyrians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines, serving as the island's capital and trade center for many years. Becoming one of the wealthiest port cities of antiquity thanks to its strategic location in Mediterranean trade, Salamis was eventually abandoned due to earthquakes and raids, but its surviving ruins still keep its glorious past alive. The impressive Roman Theatre with its dazzling architecture, the columned Gymnasium (sports and education area), ancient baths, mosaics, and agora take visitors on a journey through thousands of years. Today, the theatre section also hosts various cultural and art events thanks to its unique atmosphere and acoustics. With both its rich historical heritage and its seaside location, Salamis is one of the must-see open-air museums of Cyprus. *Images are taken from www.adakibrisim.com.
