About

Rising majestically to the east of Kyrenia Harbour, Kyrenia Castle is one of the most magnificent and best-preserved defensive structures in Northern Cyprus throughout history. First built by the Byzantines in the 7th century to protect against Arab raids, the castle attained its current fascinating and multi-layered architecture through additions made during the Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman and British periods. Playing a critical role in the island's defense alongside St. Hilarion Castle throughout history, the structure offers visitors a journey through time with its imposing bastions, dungeons, St. George Church and Venetian towers. One of the most striking parts of the castle is the Shipwreck Museum, where the 3rd century BC Kyrenia Shipwreck, considered among the oldest and most important examples of underwater archaeology in the world, is exhibited. With both its rich historical heritage and its panoramic views overlooking the Mediterranean and the historic Kyrenia Harbour, the castle is one of the must-see landmark structures of Cyprus. *Images are taken from www.adakibrisim.com.
