About

Located just east of Kyrenia, on the foothills of the Kyrenia Mountains, Bellapais Abbey is one of the most enchanting and historic structures in Northern Cyprus. Built in the 12th century by the French Lusignans, the abbey derives its modern name from the French "Abbaye de la Paix" (Abbey of Peace). Considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Mediterranean, the structure stands out with its imposing arches, peaceful courtyard, historic refectory, and panoramic sea views overlooking all of Kyrenia. Situated in the center of Bellapais village—which also inspired British writer Lawrence Durrell's book "Bitter Lemons"—the abbey is not only a historical sightseeing spot today, but also a living heritage site that hosts international classical music festivals and special cultural-artistic events thanks to its magnificent acoustics.
